Windows and Mirrors: Celebrating Diversity in the School Library
**Back for a second year - if you missed this session in 2018, stop by this year! ** The concept of using literature with young people as “Windows and Mirrors” into their world and the perspectives of others with different experiences is an important and relevant topic today. Attendees will explore how diversity by design happens when pairing readers with text that showcases a continually diverse and ever-colorful world as well as ways to reach out within the school culture and surrounding community to provide opportunities for conversations and experiences that combine resources.
Presented by Shannon Resh, South Western District: Park Hills Elementary School
STEAM SUCCESS in the K-6 Library Media Center
STEAM SUCCESS K-6 - Have you jumped on the STEAM engine in your library? Two STEAM units will be shared in a k-3 setting and a 4-6 setting. Along with these units other STEAM activities will be shared along with group participation. Storytime stem activities will be presented.
Presented by: Cindy Rizzolino, Nazareth Area School District and Laura Fuller, Nazareth Area School District
Fierce Females: Owning Their Strong Voices and Bodies
The workshop showcases means in which younger females can advocate for their own bodies and voices through the use of literature. Kim Briggs, the author of several young adult novels under various pen names, examines ways students can be encouraged to stand up for their beliefs, generate positive body image, examine ways in which females step into stereotypical male roles, and the means in which females embrace their assertive voice and power.
Presented by: Kim Briggs, Gripping Tales
Research Ready? Prove it! Badges + Breakouts = Evidence
High school librarians must ensure information competencies of students before they head off to college. Digital badges used as part of a blended "Senior Research Qualifier" course measure and microcredential the information fluency of seniors before they can perform their senior capstone project. Learn how this course is organized, which skills are included, what assessments are used, and how badges work to help measure these critical skills.
Presented by: Brenda Boyer, Kutztown High School; Rutgers University
G-Suite for Littles-- Fitting All Elementary Students
Have you seen the excitement of using G-Suite with students but thought that it would be too difficult for your “littles”? Attend this session to learn how one K-5 librarian has made use of G-Suite tools with all of her students, providing successful differentiated experiences even with kindergarteners. Leave with great resources to use and ideas of how you can make adaptations for your own students. A Google account is needed for the session.
