The New Diversity
Matt de la Peña will talk about the story behind each story and how my approach to writing diversity has evolved over the course of my career.
Presented by: Matt de la Peña, 2019 PSLA Keynote Author
Sharing Stories: Librarian as Human Rights Advocate
As librarians we have the opportunity to reach a tremendously diverse audience. Stories aid students in empathizing with “the other”, those whose lives, either through circumstance or choice, may vary greatly from their own. What resources are available to better aid teachers and students in studying these topics? We will hear from a United States Holocaust Museum Teacher Fellow who has traveled to historical sites and museums related to the Holocaust and genocide in Europe, Israel, and Africa. Utilizing an appropriate pedagogical approach, developed by the United States Holocaust Museum, participants will be better prepared to collaborate with English language arts and social studies teachers to support curriculum through online resources and personal narratives.
Presented by: R. Matthew Good, Donegal Junior High School
Collaborative Composing
This presentation will provide participants with a view of the year-long collaborative journey shared by a high school English teacher and the school’s library-teacher. We would like to share the story and the approaches we used to blend information literacy skills into the literary curriculum. We will provide examples of learning situations, discuss assessment options, and share the feedback, and present attitudes and behaviors/responses of the students who were part of this learning journey.
Presented by: Kathleen Pagano, Council Rock H.S. North and Joy Vander Vliet, Council Rock H.S. North
Diverse design of the school library webpage
The first impression that others have of your library program can take place online before they even enter the school door. Ensure that your students and educational community have access to the diverse collections at your library by creating or redesigning your library webpage. Learn from a librarian that has redesigned their webpage and has best practices and planning guides to share. Participate in groups to identify strengths and areas of improvement for your webpage.
Presented by: Beth McGuire, Hempfield Area School District
